This might be an unusual type of post to direct at Frozen fandom because the latter has gained a completely undeserved reputation of appalling, repulsively intolerant and vicious place. Where anyone with a vocal opinion, boldly individualistic mindset and critical approach towards the movie’s narrative and it’s glaringly evident flaws is instantly persecuted and eaten up alive, to quote a deliciously villainous Mother Gothel from Tangled.
But in all honesty I want to take a moment to celebrate Frozen fandom. Because so far it has been quite literally the only Disney related community pertaining to the newly released/so-called Disney Revival movies that has presented an overwhelming variety and richness of views and outlooks as far as the story, characters, animation and other elements of Frozen are concerned.
As someone who has been continually attacked, condescended and name called for highlighting the problems with, say, Brave or Princess and the Frog - undeniably virtuous and skillfully crafted movies that, however, lacked perceivable layers, consistency and exceptionally high quality a lot of other Disney Classic Franchise creations are marked by - I’ve been delightfully flattered to be able to speak my mind regarding Frozen’s objective storytelling faultiness without facing unceasing condemnation. Addressing my monumentally huge issues with the plot, routes the writers/directors took with certain characters’ arcs and particularly unsettling - albeit presumably unintentional - messages and notions the movie ended up conveying (i.e Elsa’s lack of romantic storyline was designed as empowering but came off as inadvertently offensive considering she is one of the only two official princesses left without a love interest. And coincidentally one with the struggle that was expressively and deliberately symbolizing mental illness. Seeing as in contemporary society women with psychological issues still suffer from inevitable stigmatizing and are often led to believe they can’t be desirable because of their emotional instabilities Elsa’s arc subtly reinforces and solidifies this harmful ideology).
While unavoidably negative and distressingly unpleasant instances have occurred briefly I choose to not dwell on them and would rather thank Frozen fandom for putting up with me and my ranting in the tag. For understanding where my heavy scrutiny is coming from. And that I choose to examine my problems with this movie instead of internalizing exhausting frustration because I care. Rather than because I’m inclined to force my subjective interpretations on anyone. Have a virtual cookie <3
