Akashi not realizing he loves Furihata because he’s already in love with this sorta-kinda-anonymous texting buddy that accidentally typed in the wrong number when he was announcing “I got into the basketball club!!” Which means basically since the start of the year they’ve been talking back and forth and he’s conflicted because Furi is so cute and talks sort of like that anonymous person types and sometimes his phone went off right after Akashi texted that person and as the WC goes on Akashi gets more and more suspicious… Not to mention his first name is Kouki, and his buddy said to call them “Kou-kun or something like that just fyi lol”
And Furihata realized who it was really early on when Kuroko glanced over his shoulder the day he got into the club and said “Is that the number you intended to type? I didn’t know you knew Akashi-kun.” Following a mini-freakout, the polite “Congratulations. Who is this?” both soothes his nerves and makes him insane with worry. And he falls very slowly for this softened image that forms out of “mutual anonymity” that lulls Akashi into a sense of security that lets him talks about when he’s upset or how sometimes he wishes he could go to karaoke with his sempai but he’s always busy thanks to his prior decisions. It takes only a few days for the anxiety to fade out. They talk Shogi, and general strategy/tactics which both are very good at, and basketball which they aren’t quite on equal ground with, and some nights they stay up together when they can’t talk to anyone else about how crappy their day was. Eventually, he gets a “Seijirou is my name. Use it wisely.”
But then he meets him and Furi gets so nervous and playing Kuroko’s chaperone doesn’t help the situation okay? This wasn’t how he wanted to meet Akashi at all and now he think Akashi hates him in person and the aura he maintains in public is toxic. Furi suddenly understands all those nights Akashi had vented and misspelled words from blurred eyes and shaking hands. It wasn’t just toxic to others- it was hurting the real Akashi behind the image and the “I win, therefore I am right” bullshit. He doesn’t leave not just because he’s scared- but also because he was determined to see the public face of his texting buddy.
So when Seirin goes against Rakuzan and Furihata faces Akashi for maybe two minutes and wins the battle, and maybe even the war? Well. That changes things. Then after the game Akashi actually calls him instead of texting him, and Furi fumbles with his phone [he has a special ringtone for Akashi pbbt] and tries to leave as he picks up without realizing Akashi is literally watching him as he says “H-hello?” and suddenly he knows and Akashi lets the mask fall as he reverently whispers “Kou-kun,” before like hugging him and burying his face in his sweaty, smelly jersey and letting his phone fall to the floor and oh my god the teams go wild.
EDIT: I’m not writing this! I’d love to, but I’m busy right now! But it’s such a cute idea, I don’t mind if someone else mooches off it. No need to ask.
